In today’s society, we tend to praise those who are in the spotlight. The one standing on stage. The voice on the radio. The one whose face is filling the television in pure HD. And let’s be honest, high definition isn’t always a great thing!
But we forget that for every person who stands on the stage, there are usually teams of people working tirelessly behind the scenes to make things happen. Yes, it is a thankless job but it is so important. No, it is not the role that some refer to as the – “well, someone’s gotta do it” job. It is so much bigger than that! It is overlooked and many times taken for granted, but if you are the one fulfilling this role, you know it’s where the magic happens!
Here is a phrase I love. You fulfilling your purpose affects the next person fulfilling theirs. It actually grew out of my thoughts on how when we accomplish a goal or dream in our life, it motivates someone else to do the same. But today, I want to use it in the context of those working behind the scenes.
Whether it is in church ministry, your day job, or even your life at home, please know this. What you do is important. It matters. As you fulfill your purpose behind the scenes you are helping someone else fulfill their purpose on stage. They go hand in hand really. They need you and you need them. You are each using your gifts and abilities to serve the greater good of helping others.
You fulfilling your purpose affects the next person fulfilling theirs.
Now let’s get practical for a minute. Behind the scenes is a tough job. It requires many hours of hustle and it can be overwhelming. When I work with clients to help them accomplish goals in their lives, I tell them to follow a 4-step process. Here is a basic overview and you can learn more about this at theworldneedsyourhustle.com:
- Define your goal. Too many times we wake up ready to tackle the world and then by lunch we are burnt out because we don’t even know where to start. Get specific with your goal. Narrow it down and this will lead to accomplished tasks much quicker.
- Create an action plan. I am a big believer in writing it down. Write down your tasks, put them in order, divide them into smaller sections. Anything to help create an effective plan to get it done!
- Determine your why. This is what motivates us and helps us through those oh-so-frustrating moments. Remember why you are doing this in the first place. Who is it helping and what greater good will this goal accomplish?
- Celebrate your accomplishment. This is the fun part! Find a way to celebrate your achievement – big or small! And the reward might be anything from your favorite drink at Sonic to a day at the spa! You worked hard and I say you deserve to celebrate!
I appreciate Deborah giving me the chance to write for all of you. I hope that you will find encouragement in knowing that what you do matters. I know that most of you help in church ministry and I cannot say enough how important your role is. No matter the job, it is work that makes an eternal difference! So keep hustling because the world needs it. If I can help out in any way, feel free to reach out!
The world needs your hustle!
